I have always been a fan of creating themed, colourful photo collages, and I regularly use them in my personal custom photo books. I feel that by using this style of presentation with photos, it allows you to bring together several related images, to display them in a layout that allows for varying sized images, related to each other, to enhance their storytelling power.

The key to creating a great looking photo collage is to use contrasting images, relating to a subject matter with enough variation in colour and content that your eye moves around the page.
When displaying several photos together of the same subject, it is important that they are different enough to not look repetitive. If your heart is set on using two similar images, you could try setting the photos diagonally in the layout, to provide some balance to the collage. Make sure there is enough variation in colour on the page to prevent images blending into each other, as this may create a bland-looking result.
Cropping empty space and adjusting image size allows you to zoom in on the detail you want the viewer to see. A little side note: When taking photos, it’s usually a good idea to leave some space around your subject as cropping and editing, later on, can be achieved but, taking a photo too tight, and you may have left out a foot or the top of someone’s head.

Customised borders, colours, textures, and stickers can enhance the theme of your photo collage.
I quite like adding text to collages- examples of this are captions, titles, and descriptions.
I have used photo collages for years as gifts for my loved ones to display family history, wedding anniversary photo gifts, to announce the birth of my children, to share travelling photos with my family, to share important events and holidays in my family's life, and for sporting events.
Collages look great in family history photo albums, travel photo albums, wedding photo books, and baby photo books.
